Theology
Background
Theology is one of my driving passions. I'm particularly interested in how theology relates to legal theory and public policy. I'm also interested in the relationship between theology and modern science. Religious epistemology and postmodernism also have caught my fancy. These are areas in which I've invested significant study time. I'm far from a leading expert in any of these areas, but if you're interested in how I've tried to suss them out, follow the links below.
You can also follow my theological and other musings on my "Through a Glass Darkly" blog.
Why Theology?
In his wonderful systematic theology text, "Theology for the Community of God," theologian Stanley Grenz said that "all Christians are theologians." I'd suggest that Grenz's observation is true for religious people of any stripe. What this means is that Christians (and others) who take their religious faith seriously will seek to relate their faith to all of life. My faith affects how I worship in church, how I think about personal moral questions, how I relate to my friends, co-workers and family -- and also to how I think about the law, culture, and society.
Why this Page?
Some readers might wonder why I would include a "theology" page on my site. Religion, after all, is one of those things that often leads to misunderstanding and division. In polite company, perhaps, it's best not to talk about religion or politics. It's a private matter, not to be projected into a public space. (Of course, as a law professor, I can't help but talk about politics sometimes, which means I already have a strike against me!)
For me, though, my faith and my interest in theology wind around the core of my being. I could no more segregate these parts of myself than I could cut off one of my hands. These parts of myself inform everything I do, including my teaching and scholarship, sometimes in subtle ways, but always concretely. If you are a person of a different faith or of no faith, I won't be put off or threatened by that, and I hope you won't be put off or threatened by anything I might say. Let's exchange stories and reasons, and learn from each other.
